(FOLK ART). PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN DESIGNS. A Portfolio of Silk Screen Prints. The Index of American Design; The National Gallery of Art; Research by the Pennsylvania W.P.A. Art Project. [New York]: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, (1943). First edition. pp., + 20 loose plates, as issued. The plates reproduce decorative details from Pennsylvania German designs on chests, ceramics, birth certificates, and decorations painted on paper. Each print is an original silk screen by The Creative Printmakers Group; they have copied the bright colors and, in some cases, even simulated the paint finishes of the original objects. The plates are printed on poster board and measure 14 by 11 inches; a description and a line drawing of the entire object are printed on the reverse of each plate. All of the plates are toned at the edges, and some show light edgewear or marginal dust soiling. Housed in the original cloth-backed portfolio; white cloth, terra cotta sides, with decoration and letters printed in white to upper board. It is moderately soiled overall, a little edgeworn, and the cloth is starting. The plates are nicely printed and in very good condition.
