Known for the discoveries of latent heat, fixed air, and the nature of alkaline earths, Black taught for 40 years at Glasgow and Edinburgh, and was extremely useful to Scottish industrial and mining interests. His fame as a teacher spread to America and Europe, and many foreigners studied with him. He also provided a lecture series for non-scientists, and Boswell took his course. Scarce.
